Hint 1

It's possible to get the book from Kiri before this point; all you have to do is join forces with her, and then when you get the opportunity, ask her, "Any breakthroughs in the competition?"

Hint 2

However, you won't get the chance to ask her this until you completely follow up on the "goldmines" comic.

Hint 3

Once you've followed that one through as far as you can, you'll find Kiri in her usual place and can get the book from her.
