It might be momentarily satisfying to be harsh and tell the culprit they have to just live with the consequences --

-- but do you really want to be that kind of a person? The final ending is pretty much the same either way, but it's slightly less painful if you're nice than if you're hardline.

Still, you can do either one and win the game. Save before you choose, and then you can try it both ways and see.
